About The Event

Join us for a special screening of Justice and Reconciliation: Henry Highland Garnet to Harvey Johnson, a powerful new historical documentary by filmmaker and scholar Xavier Frink, in collaboration with Michael Nelson.

This film explores the lives and legacies of two pioneering Maryland leaders:

  • Henry Highland Garnet — a Liberty Party leader, president of the African Civilization Society, and Civil War chaplain to Union soldiers on Riker’s Island.

  • Harvey Johnson — founder of the Brotherhood of Liberty, a precursor to the Niagara Movement and ultimately the NAACP, and an architect of early Black civil rights organizing in Maryland.

Through their stories, the film examines justice under the law, cultural reconciliation, the significance of Juneteenth, and the broader call for pluralism in America.
